Gass & Trump Big Winners In Jefferson County

Tennessee came out in force for Super Tuesday and Jefferson County was well represented in the numbers, as voters braved the inclement weather to cast their ballots. With only one contested local race, that of Property Assessor, much of the interest was on the Presidential Primary for both political parties. As Jefferson County, like Tennessee, is thick Republican territory, the GOP came out in force to cast their votes in a highly contested Presidential Primary.

Ultimately, with 10488 voting in the election, Trump was the candidate of choice in Jefferson County with 4050. He was followed by Cruz with 2005 votes and Rubio with 1579 votes. A far distant Carson and Kasich received 664 and 408 votes respectively. Statewide the tally mirrored Jefferson County’s totals, with Trump getting the lion’s share of the coveted delegates. Democrats in Jefferson County came out to cast their votes as well, giving the nod to Clinton, who also took home the state prize in the Democrat Primary, besting Sanders who received 592 locally, which was much closer than originally anticipated, to Clinton’s 735.

On the local level, a highly contested quest for the title of Property Assessor ended Tuesday evening as incumbent Susan Gass fended off competition from Ryan Cavanah and was elected to another term Jefferson County Property Assessor with a total of 4654 votes to Cavanah’s 3427 votes. Though the position of Highway Superintendent was not contested, Charles Tipton received 6462 votes of confidence.
