Just a Bunch of Clowns

editorial-logo3Like many across the nation, I have been glued to news outlets, try to absorb all that I can regarding the Presidential Primary. Usually, I am engaged and disengaged at the same time, meaning that I would really like to be interested but, frankly, it isn’t very interesting. This year boredom is the least of my problems. I, again like many, watched the most recent Republican Debate. Perhaps I should clarify, I watched as much of the debate as I could see with my hands over my face. Granted my hands are not as ample as say, Trump’s, but they did the job quite nicely and blocked at least a small part of the folly. Though I have found the back and forth between all ( save Kasich and the newly departed Carson) to be riveting, I have also found myself scratching my head in confusion and cringing in embarrassment in equal parts. But, nothing that has been said during the debates has infuriated me quite like Mitt Romney did this week.

I have spoken to several conservative red party friends who are intelligent, educated and informed and the prevailing theme appears to be indignation that what constitutes to be a handful of the GOP elite believe that they know better than their populous. Every Republican should be furious and repulsed at the condescending attitude toward the majority of their party. Do you like Trump? Then you are an uneducated redneck that is not a true conservative. Do you like Cruz? Then you must be a bible thumping evangelical nut job. Do you like Rubio? Ahhh, now there you go, you are finally playing ball with the big boys and that is the way is should be, in the world according to the GOP hierarchy.

For years, I have voted my conscious-be that for a Republican or a Democrat. I just believe that is how is should be. Party affiliation should not override good judgment. But, no matter how I might feel personally, no matter if I support Trump or Cruz or Kasich or Big Bird, I expect-I demand- that my party of affiliation not usurp the will of the people. The candidate with the highest vote count is the choice of the people. I don’t care if he has 39% or 59%, if he is the guy with the most votes, he has won the right to represent the Republican Party in the general election.

You know, it is just down right offensive to think that some self proclaimed elitist group believes that they have the right to overstep the process and ignore the will of the people. Perhaps, just perhaps, this is what has been wrong with the Republican Party all along and the reason that, despite the fact that the GOP put an unbelievable amount of money promoting candidates for the last several Presidential elections, no one really cared. They are obviously out of touch with their people. Even more, they are out of touch with reality. During the past week, I have heard staunch Republicans, who embodied the very core of conservatism, say that they will leave the Grand Ole Party in the dust if they continue on this path of overstepping the will of the people. And interestingly, these incensed party members were not supporters of the same candidate, but they were all aware of a greater issue at stake,-one that will influence far beyond this election. So, as for the next candidate speech and the next hot topic debate, I say bring it on. Because, one thing is for certain-I would much rather watch the candidate’s circus than spend one second with the GOP elitist clowns.
