Editorial – World Didn’t End

This is the season of giving and hope, peace and love. If you are reading this editorial then you obviously know that the world did not end last Friday. For those that were putting off making decision and changes because it just might not matter…well, guess what…the sun rose on Saturday and the world still stands. Sure things are a little shaky sometimes and we may be rushing headlong over the fiscal cliff but the world continues to turn. Like it or not, we are a resilient people on a resilient planet and we continue on. Will we go over the fiscal cliff? Very possibility. Will we fight over gun control? I think that particular argument has never been off of the table and every tragic event only fuels both sides. Can we locally agree on school spending and road maintenance? My guess is no. But, and this is a big but, disagreement does not have to erode to anger and rage. We can have real conversations about real issues and come to real compromise that satisfies most involved. The world is not on the verge of ending anytime soon and we need to stop acting like it is. If past generations reacted instead of acted then the progress that we now enjoy would not exist. Real problems require action…not reaction. Life is full of difficult questions and much depends on perspective. Now that we know that there is no imminent way out, no short cut to the end of time, maybe we can make the decision to do the real, tough work of living and preparing this world for our grandchildren. The sun rose on Saturday and it brought with it a fresh chance to do things right. I hope that locally, Nationally, Globally we embrace the opportunity for a prosperous future. I plan to put that wish on my Christmas list. It is never too late to be better, stronger, smarter, and more compassionate. I hope that Christmas finds you and your family filled with peace and love. Merry Christmas to all and God Bless You!
