JCHS Students Participate in VFW “Our Voice of Democracy” Audio-Essay Program

Students at Jefferson County High School, along with others across the nation, are taking part in the 2016 VFW Our Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay Program. Established in 1947, the Our Voice of Democracy program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic or patriotic-themed recorded essay.

This year’s essay theme is “My Responsibility to America.” Jefferson County High School teacher David Seal especially promotes the essay in his class, as he wants his students to be informed about what is going on in the world around them. Seal assigns the VFW essay in class, working with students on their 3 to 5 minute audio recording, and leading critiques of each essay to provide improvement for students.

The program is promoted in several history and English classes throughout the high school, and more than 3 times the average number of students are interested in taking part. The names of the top three essay winners at the high school will be announced at the annual Night of the Patriots event. The top winner of the high school will go on to compete at the regional level, and possibly the state level for the chance of a $30,000 scholarship. The JCHS deadline for the essay is October 28th, with the VFW deadline being November 1st. Students, grab those pens and get to work!
