Rebounding Temperatures After First Measurable Snowfall Of 2017

The first measurable snowfall of 2017 is still hanging around two days after the new year’s most memorable winter weather event thus far. In a season of roller coaster temperatures, the shocking low temperatures that accompanied the January 6th and January 7th snow were a strong reminder from Old Man Winter that the season has really just begun. Single digit lows and below freezing high temperatures were ushered into the area on Friday evening, along with several inches of snow that blanketed East Tennessee.

Local schools dismissed early on Friday, January 6th, in anticipation of a bout of winter precipitation that appeared to be working its way into the area. Grocery stores and gas stations were over run with customers preparing for a significant snow event. As is typical in East Tennessee, Friday’s snow did not arrive in the early afternoon as was expected. Flurries and light snow did fall but there was no real accumulation as the sun fell over the valley. Those that were eagerly anticipating the first measurable snow did not have to wait long. Around nine o’clock Friday evening the flakes began to fall at a steady pace and the accumulation began. By mid day Saturday, several inches of snow laid on the ground and cautioned was urged for those that had to brave the slippery, snow and ice covered roads. Frigid temperatures did little to help with melting and many local churches canceled Sunday services. Again on Sunday, temperatures did not get above freezing and late Sunday afternoon officials made the decision to cancel classes on Monday for students.

Local weather forecasts show rebounding temperatures on the horizon but Monday’s anticipated high temperatures may not have a significant impact on shady, ice and snow packed roads. By the end of the week, temperatures are expected to be more spring like and a January thaw looks like it is on the way. Winter lovers should not fret. As is usual with East Tennessee weather, the pendulum will soon enough swing back and Old Man Winter will, again, make his presence known.
