School Board Holds Final Meeting of 2017

The Jefferson County School Board met Thursday evening, the eve of the last day of school for students and staff before the holiday break. This was the final meeting for the 2017 calendar year for the School Board and the last meeting where Director of Schools Dr. Charles Edmonds would be at the helm of the Jefferson County School System. Though the agenda for Thursday’s meeting was largely general housekeeping in nature, the Board did approve a handful of budget amendments and trips for students. They also rolled a request from the Jefferson County Fair that would alter the current arrangement between the Fair and the School System. The Board will take the holiday break to look over the request, which suspends the payment that was made to the School System for use of the grounds, and would impact the current manner that events are insured that use the fair grounds.

In other action, the Board addressed the salary of interim Director of Schools Sherry Finchum. Currently, Finchum is a Supervisor at the Jefferson County Board of Education Central Office. On January 1st, she will assume the role of interim Director of Jefferson County Schools, replacing an exiting Edmonds who left before the end of his contract due to medical concerns. Finchum will receive a salary increase of $3,000 per month for the duration of her time at the post of Director of Jefferson County Schools. The search for a permanent replacement for Edmonds will begin in earnest after the first of the year, with an eye on securing a new director in early spring.
