Times, They Are A Changing

On November 1, the day after Halloween, we gain one hour of precious time. Finally the mornings will be lighted by the sun—no more scrambling around in the dark praying that your pants match your shirt. At 2:00 a.m. turn your clocks back one hour and get some more much-needed rest!

This blessed hour of time we get is called daylight savings. It was adopted into the United States calendar in March, 1918. Originally, daylight savings was created due to World War I. The German Empire and Austria decided that they would move their clocks back one hour to save the fuel typically used to light the early morning darkness. This concept soon spread to France, the United Kingdom, and of course the United States. With the morning now lighted by the sun instead of artificial fuel, money and time was saved, both being precious commodities with a world war going on. Now,  we can appreciate the extra sleep and morning visibility with the time change and, somewhat impatiently, await another.

The Jefferson County Post hopes everyone has had a wonderfully spooky Halloween and wishes sweet dreams upon all during this extra long night!
