Keep It Simple

My son is looking to buy flowers for his new girlfriend for Valentines Day. This is his first real girlfriend and I am not sure what is appropriate for a gift. They are both in the eighth grade and will be going to see an early movie on Valentines Day. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t want him to overdo it and I don’t want her to be disappointed.

The most important thing to remember is to keep it simple. A really great gift does not have to cost a lot of money and, in fact, spending too much could make your son’s girlfriend or her parents a little uncomfortable. While flowers are a wonderful Valentines Day gift, they can be quite expensive at this time of the year. While a grown woman might get as much, or more, enjoyment from receiving flowers that are not roses, young girls would expect the traditional roses for Valentines Day so I would forego the flowers. Instead, have your son pick up a really cute stuffed animal and a box of candy. Both are favorites with teen age girls and should be a hit with your son’s girlfriend. Remember to keep the date simple and the gift thoughtful but modest and this should be a great first Valentines Day experience for your son.
