Earlier this month, the City of Morristown was notified by the Tennessee Municipal League (TML) that they were selected as the recipient of the “Excellence in Recreation Facilities Award”. This week, City staff and Council members attended the TML 83rd Annual Conference in Nashville at which they were honored during the event ceremony and presented with the award. This award was given to the City of Morristown to honor the comprehensive project of the Morristown Landing and its positive impact on the quality of life for our community.

Morristown leadership had long held the goal of opening a new community center with amenities that would contribute to the health, wellness, and quality of life for citizens. After much planning and public input, the resulting facility was Morristown Landing Recreation and Events Center. The facility, which opened in March of this year, has already proven to be a valuable asset to our community. It has become a hub for physical fitness, family fun, community events, athletic tournaments, and group gatherings.

Each year the Tennessee Municipal League honors cities throughout the state for overall excellence, improvement, specific outstanding programs, or department accomplishments.  The City of Morristown is proud to be among the cities chosen for this honor.

Mayor Gary Chesney spoke regarding receiving the award that, “It was a real honor to be standing in front of a statewide audience at the TML Conference as the story of Morristown Landing was presented.  When we consider the quality of life improvements that have been made here over the past ten years, The Landing is the crown star.  Our Council is appreciative of the opportunity to create this recreation and events center for our community.   Earning this recognition across the state is ‘icing on the cake’.”
