Jefferson County Post Urges – Drive with Care – School Is Back in Session

A Message from the Jefferson County Post: Drive with Care—School Is Back in Session

As summer fades and the school bells ring once again across Jefferson County, the Jefferson County Post urges all motorists to exercise heightened caution on our roads. With the return of students to classrooms, our streets are once again bustling with buses, young pedestrians, and newly licensed teen drivers. It’s a time for renewed vigilance, patience, and responsibility behind the wheel.

School Zones Demand Your Attention

School zones are now active throughout the county, and speed limits in these areas are strictly enforced. These reduced speed limits are not suggestions—they are legal mandates designed to protect our children. Whether you’re driving through Dandridge, near Jefferson County High School, or passing elementary campuses in White Pine, Jefferson City, New Market, Strawberry Plains or Talbott, be alert for flashing lights, crossing guards, and students on foot or bicycle.

Speeding through a school zone not only risks a hefty fine—it endangers lives. Children may dart across streets unexpectedly, and buses frequently stop to load and unload students. Tennessee law requires drivers to stop for school buses when their stop arms are extended, regardless of the direction of travel on undivided roadways.

New Drivers on the Road

This season also marks a rite of passage for many Jefferson County teens: earning their driver’s licenses. These young drivers are commuting to school for the first time, navigating traffic patterns, and learning the rules of the road in real time. While they may be cautious, they are still gaining experience. Other drivers should be mindful of this and avoid aggressive maneuvers, tailgating, or distractions that could lead to accidents.

Parents are encouraged to talk with their teens about safe driving habits, including avoiding cell phone use, obeying speed limits, and being extra cautious in school zones and residential areas.

A Community Responsibility

Safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re a parent, a commuter, or a retiree running errands, your attentiveness can make the difference between a safe school year and a tragic one. Let’s model good behavior for our youth and protect the future of Jefferson County by driving with care and compassion.

The Jefferson County Post is proud to serve this community and reminds everyone: slow down, stay alert, and make safety your priority. Our students are counting on you.
