Trusted Hairdresser… Priceless!

caroline-graham-swann-small2Hello Darlings, bad hair days can turn the sunniest personality into a crisis of despair, especially the color turning orange or green and being shorn like a sheep, when only an inch was to be trimmed.

One of the most valuable assets in a woman’s life is her favorite hairdresser. Nearly all women have had the experience of a major catastrophe with the wrong stylist, either through miscommunication, difference of opinion or lack of skill.

My disaster happened in New York City. I went to a very well know salon, in fact applauded in a major magazine, and placed my long locks in the hands of a famous hairdresser. Immediately he wanted to give me a new style. Thinking I was in the Mecca of perfection as far as the knowledge of beautiful hair, I agreed for him to create what he thought was perfect look.

Now, my hair was long, it had been long for years and I liked it that way, because it could be changed into many different styles at a whim. I considered my long locks to have a glamorous look and anyone who knows me knows that I am a fan of glamour.

I should have told him to stop when he turned the electric razor on BUZZ, but he was the famous expert, touted for his expertise in well known fashion magazines. And, he had styled so many well known fashionistas, that I naturally concluded that he must know something I don’t about cutting very thick hair with an electric razor.

Oh how I wish I had told him to stop!!!!! My long tresses were in a heap on the floor and my head was closely shorn with not much left to work with for a style. He managed to pull up wisps and told me to swirl it in a circle around my head for a very unique look.

Horrified cannot even begin to describe how I felt. Tears started streaming down my face and I grabbed my purse, paid for the shearing of my long hair and dreaded going out on the streets of Manhattan. I could not stop crying and wanted to hide like a dog does when he/she knows their hair has been cut too short. But, unfortunately there was no bed for me to run under until I could catch a cab and get home.

…And to top it all off, there was a major Christmas party on Park Avenue that I had looked forward to for weeks. How could I dare appear looking like a shorn sheep?

I had to make the best of it , changed my make up a bit , added more eye liner to draw attention to my eyes and prayed that I would not get cold feet and hide under the host’s bed.

My dear friend, Stanley Zarefff and I were leaving for London to spend the Christmas Holidays. When I opened the door to greet my London friends .whom had not seen me in a while, all looked shocked and screamed, “What happened to your hair”?  … I simply told them that my new hairstyle was the latest trend in the States.

Well, time passes and in a couple of years my hair was a decent length and in four years it was back to the long length I prefer. YES, it was that short!

I have been so fortunate to meet Leticia Mills (Tish), a master hairstylist in this area, and she is so talented with every aspect of styling, color and hair care. We have built a good relationship over the years and I trust her knowledge completely.

So girls, Tish has the hair fashion scoop for Spring/Summer 2013.

Color, red and copper tones are very “in” for dazzling in the summer sun,

Chin length hair in a choppy, pieces peeking out here and there, gives a very youthful and fresh look.

Long hair styled in loose waves, giving a bigger hair look is “THE” newest fashion trend for glamour girl. Tish maintains that healthy hair is a must and her favorite product is Matrix Biolage Exquisite Moroccan, made with Moraga oil. She says this is a miracle worker for healthy hair.

Yes, I know the value of a hairdresser that is truly an expert. Being featured in fashion magazines as a top hairdresser is no guarantee the stylist is the one for every woman, Inquire about your type of hair- fine, curly, coarse, thin or thick – check it out before doing a drastic change. and find an expert on your type of hair I have been there and I know the consequences!!!! Thankfully, I have the perfect person to style my coiffure. Tish Mills, you are an angel!

I shutter every time I think of my disaster in a very posh, tress chic famous salon. So, my darlings, take care of your tresses and may you have the happiest and best of hair days this Spring/Summer.
