On , March 18th and 19th, area students competed in a county speech contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal financial services organization. It was held in the main room at the Rescue Squad building in Dandridge

Prior to this contest, the students had already won first, second or third place in their individual school’s contests. They shared their presentations on this year’s topic, “A Person Who Has Overcome”.

 

Monday 18th:

The first-place winner Katie Bettis, who won a $50 cash award and a trophy. Her school, Maury Middle will also receive an engraved trophy.

Second-place winner Daniel Kesterson, from Maury Middle; and third-place winner Ashtyn Fritz, from Maury Middle, also received trophies.

 

Tuesday 19th:

The first-place winner is Brant Adams, he won a $50 cash award and a trophy. His school Jefferson Middle will also receive an engraved trophy.

Second-place winner Jade Davis and third-place winner Kayleigh Roberts both from Rush Strong Middle, also received trophies.

The top two winners from each day’s competition will speak at the district level. The four Jefferson County students will compete against surrounding counties on April 1st at Walter’s State Community College (Morristown). Speaker registration is at 5:30 with the contest beginning at 6:00 PM.

Modern Woodmen’s School Speech Contest began in 1948 and is one of many free Youth Educational Programs Modern Woodmen offers to schools nationwide. More than 100,000 students compete in the contest each year. Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures. The fraternal benefit society offers financial services and fraternal member benefits to individuals and families throughout the United States.
