Streak stopped, Eagles top LMU in doubleheader split

Thanks to a 7-6 victory over Lincoln Memorial (19-17, 11-10 South Atlantic Conference), Carson-Newman (14-21, 10-11 SAC) snapped a school record 12-game losing streak.

The Eagles had dropped three, one-run contests and eight games by three runs or less as a part of the streak.

That would not be the case Saturday afternoon in Harrogate, Tenn.

Game one: C-N 7, LMU 6

After Carson-Newman jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the first five innings, LMU scored four unanswered to knot the game and set the stage for some Eagle dramatics.

Carson-Newman would snatch a one-run lead in the seventh on a Peter Rajkovich single. With two on and one out, Rajkovich raked a ball into left field to plate Brandon Roberts from second.

The Eagles would withstand Railsplitter threats in the eighth and ninth innings. Trace Rogers gunned down Lee Agnosto at home as he tried to score from second on a single to center to finish the eighth.

Then Ryan Fillers induced a fly out to center to close the game in the ninth when the Railsplitters had the tying run in scoring position.

Daniel Sharp collected the win in relief (2-1) for the Eagles while Fillers garnered his fourth save.

Alex Britt pitched a quality start in six complete innings while striking out 10.

Game two: LMU 14, C-N 7

The Railsplitters pounded out 13 hits and countered by scoring as many or more runs in every in which Carson-Newman scored.

The Eagles looked to have started the game with hot bats. Ausmus went yard for a two-run blast to left field to give Carson-Newman a 2-0 lead.

However, business picked up in a big way for LMU in the bottom half of the frame. The Railsplitters plated five runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second to race out to a 9-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Curt Fuqua led the charge offensively for LMU in game two, he popped C-N for three hits – including a homer – and five RBI. Evan Jurjevic led the Eagles at the plate; he was a perfect three-for-three at the plate. Jurjevic hit his second and third doubles of the season to assist in driving in a run.

Dustin Dunagan was shackled with the loss (0-5) after allowing seven earned runs to across in a complete inning of work.

Patrick Morris collected the win (5-1) for LMU after a 5.2 inning start.
