Eagles lockdown fourth, Hawkins first team all-tournament at SAC Championship

Carson-Newman’s Meridith Hawkins was one of only two players in the field of 50 to score below 80 in all three rounds of the Food Lions South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championship.

Hawkins cemented the feat with her third straight 79 (+7) on day three, Tuesday. Tournament champion Barbara Castro of Newberry was the only other golfer with three sub-80 rounds.

Hawkins finished five back of the titlist and two behind fourth place Emee Herbert of Tusculum.

Carson-Newman turned in the best team performance of day three with a 320, three strokes in front of Tusculum’s 323.

Danielle Baiunco recovered from an 88 on day one to shoot a pair of 79s to close out the tournament. Baiunco, who had 14th place to herself, was one of three other golfers who had two rounds below 80 for the tournament.

Mary Tunnell followed Baiunco by a stroke with a 79 – her best round of the tournament – on day three. Tunnell improved eight strokes from day two to day three. Chelsea Passmore and Lauren Hodge both concluded their SAC Championship’s with 83s (+11) to finish tied for 18th and 22nd, respectively.

Carson-Newman was one of three schools (Newberry and Tusculum were the others) with every golfer finishing in the top half of the leaderboard.
