New Market Teachers Vs. NMVFD Annual Match Up For Relay For Life
The New Market Community came out on Friday evening to support New Market Elementary School in their quest to raise funds for Relay for Life. An annual Spring event, the softball game that pits New Market Elementary teachers and staff against the New Market Volunteer Fire Department is a favorite community activity. Though the weather was a little dicey, the event was well attended. Students provided entertainment and concessions were sold, beyond the traditional softball game. Relay for Life supports cancer research through donations to the American Cancer Society. In addition to raising funds for cancer awareness and research, Relay for Life offers the opportunity to honor those that have survived cancer and memorialize those that lost their battle to the disease. Traditionally, Relay for Life has been a Spring event in Jefferson County, however, this year it will be held on September 6, 2013 at the Carson Newman Soccer Field. New Market Elementary School is just one of many schools in the County that participate in Relay for Life. Already, the fundraising campaign in the County has almost $4,000 and most teams participating in the Relay for Life are just beginning to raise funds. Teams and individuals come together to bring sponsorship to the cancer fighting campaign. New Market’s totals for the Friday even will be posted against their team pledge. The Friday game provided an opportunity for students, teachers, staff and parents to participate in a worthwhile cause, as well as have a great kick off to the weekend.
