Eagles add 16 to football recruiting class

Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks has announced the signing of 16 players to bring the Eagles’ 2013 recruiting class to 50.

Lucas Fishman (Morristown, Tenn.), 5-9, 185 pounds, LB

The team captain for Morristown West. Fishman was an all-Lakeway region selection and an all-state selection his junior and senior seasons. Helped MWHS to a district championship.

As a junior, Fishman made 95 tackles, 18 tackles, 10 pass breakups, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 2011.

For his senior season, he was the second leading tackler in the IMAC garnering124 total stops – 34 solo, 90 assists. Over the past two seasons, he had 24 total tackles for a loss, including seven sacks, seven passes deflections, seven pass breakups, five forced fumbles and three recoveries, including a return for a touchdown. In all, Lucas had 232 tackles – 25.5 for a loss – in his prep career.

He graduated high school with distinction and is the son of Robert and Angelia Fishman. He plans to study business at C-N.

Cordarro Chatman (Memphis, Tenn.), 6-1, 245, DL

A White Haven product who was a team captain his senior year. Led White Haven to a 2012 state championship and district titles from 2010-2012.

Son of Keith Chatman, plans to major in exercise science at Carson-Newman.

Adam Lee Lunsford (Asheville, N.C.), 6-0, 185, LB

A product for Kenny Ford’s Charles D. Owen high school club. As a senior was CDO’s defensive team MVP and a all-conference selection. Lunsford helped Charles D. Owen to an appearance in the second round of the state playoffs.

Academically made the A-B honor roll all four years of his high school career and was a member of the Beta Club.

Son of Jeff and Priscilla Lunsford. Plans to major in Exercise Science at Carson-Newman.

Three sport athlete, also played basketball and ran track.

Standout at White Station High School in Memphis, Tenn., where he was coached by Devin Rutherford. Member of the 2009 State Champion Spartans and was teammates with 2013 University of Tennessee signee Jason Carr. Was All-Region First Team from 2009-12. Also was an AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star and was All-District from 2009-12.

Transfers to Carson-Newman from LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tenn.

Chose Carson-Newman because it felt like home.

Christon Stephenson Highlights

Jonathan Ross (Kingsport, Tenn.), 5-10, 165 pounds, WR/DB

Ross comes to C-N from New Hope Academy in Kingsport, Tenn. A four-sport athlete, he played football, baseball and basketball, while also running track. He was a northeast Tennessee/southwest Virginia track and field champion.

He was his team’s baseball MVP for three years and his teams football MVP his senior year.

Ross helped guide New Hope to a 10-0 record his senior year and a PFL runners up trophy.

Ross is the son of Rollen and Jackie Ross. His cousin Cedric Mitchell is the quarterback for San Diego State University and his cousin Brittany Grudger runs track for Virginia Tech. He plans to study either religion or business at C-N.

Austin White (Collierville, Tenn.), 6-3, 255, DL

An all-district selection and player of the week his senior year, White played for Mike O’Neill at Collierville High School. As a two-year starter, he had more than 50 tackles and 10 tackles for loss to go along with an interception.

A two-sport athlete who also played lacrosse with three ground balls and a shot on goal his senior year.

The son of Bill and Joyce White, plans to major in business at C-N.

Austin White Highlights

Charles Leavell (Knoxville, Tenn.), 6-0, 265 pounds, DL

A 2012 all-district selection for Eddie Courtney at Farragut High School. Was a team captain on four occasions. A two-sport athlete who also wrestled. Rose as high as no. four in the state in the heavyweight division his senior season. Was named MVW (Most Valuable Wrestler) in 2011. Guided Farragut to regional championships in 2012 and 2013.

The son of Susan Leavell, was an honor roll student in high school who is undecided on a major at C-N.

Jason Williams (Fayetteville, Ga.), 5-8, 160 pounds, QB

A team captain and all-region selection for Mike Davis at Fayette County High School. Also ran track in high school.

The son of Teri and Jimmie Williams, Williams plans to major in business administration at C-N.

Courtney Heard (Chattanooga, Tenn.) 5-10, 205, RB/LB

A three-sport athlete at the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. Led his team in tackles with 108 his senior year. Earned all-region and all-city honors as a result. Also led his squad in sacks and tackles for loss his senior year.

Helped his high school to a district championship in 2009 and 2010 and a district runners-up in 2011. CSAS made the playoffs every year of Heard’s high school career.

A three-sport athlete, Heard also ran track and wrestled.

The son of Corey Heard and Tammy Sanderson, plans to major in physical therapy at C-N.

Devin Thomas (Orlando, Fla.), 5-11, 165 pounds, WR

A Metro All-Star game participant his senior year and most valuable offensive back for Phil Zigler at Boone High School. He had more than 400 yards receiving and seven TDs as a senior.

A two-sport athlete who also ran track.

The son of Michelle Thomas, plans to work toward a career in architecture.

Devin Thomas Highlights

Damaris Griffin (Kodak, Tenn.), 6-2, 202 pounds, WR

A first team all-region pick at wide receiver for coach Jim Moore at Seymour High School. Also earned first team all-county honors at wide receiver.

A three-sport athlete who also played basketball and ran track. Earned all-region and all-county honors for his performance on the hardwood two years running.

The son of Claudia Griffin, plans to major in animal science.

A team captain and all-Big 8 conference first team linebacker for Stacey Carter at Science Hill High School. Was Science Hill’s team MVP for linemen and linebackers.

A two-time player of the week, who also played in the 2013 Tennessee-Kentucky Border Bowl. Also played in the 2013 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Bowl.

 

The son of Hal and Paige Janeway, is undecided on a major. His father played football for East Tennessee State. His uncle is former University of Tennessee and NFL quarterback Bobby Scott. His cousin Benson Scott also played football for the Vols.

 

Grant Janeway Highlights

 

Joshua Holoman (Orlando, Fla.), 6-0, 170 pounds, ATH

 

The MVP of his backfield for coach Marc Rankin at East River High School for two years, Holoman was selected to the Central Florida East All-Star team. Helped guide ERHS to a 2011 district championship and a 2010 district runners-up trophy.

 

He also ran track.

 

The son of Carla and Desmond Holoman, plans to study physics at C-N. His mother and father were both athletes for the University of Alabama. His mother ran track while his father was a linebacker for the Crimson Tide.

Patrick Priest (Athens, Tenn.), 6-3, 275 pounds, OL

 

An offensive lineman who registered 40 pancake blocks a year for coach Bo Cagle at McMinn County High School. Was named all-area and all-district for the Cherokees. Also was a Best of Preps selection.

 

Helped MCHS to a district championship.

 

The son of Patrick and Missy Priest, plans to study economics at C-N.

 

Jordan Boyd (Charlotte, N.C.), 5-10, 195 pounds, LB

 

A first team all-conference linebacker for coach Mike Palimeri at Mallard Creek High School. Helped MCHS to a conference and regional championships his senior year.

 

A two-sport athlete who also played baseball.

 

A national honor student. Boyd is the son of Jordan Boyd and Sandra Simmons-Boyd. His father played football at Arkansas State University. Plans to major in business.

 

Christian Molina (Nashville, Tenn.), 5-7, 215 pounds, LB

 

A two-time all-metro selection for Michael Woodard at Antioch High School. Was named the district’s offensive line MVP in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was a finalist for the student athlete home award.

 

Helped Antioch to a 2011 district championship.

 

His mother is Rosa Hernandez and his father is Tom Molina. Plans to study communication at C-N.
