What Does It Mean To Be “Organic”

PeppersWith larger populations and more mouths to feed, the popularity of genetically modified crops (GMO foods) has increased drastically in recent years. These foods have had their DNA altered to produce larger and faster growing crops. Along with the increased popularity of GMO’s, there has also been a rise in the number of people considering Vegetarian, Vegan, and organic diets. Being a “veggie” has come far since the days of being only associated with animal rights activists. Many choose the lifestyle now in order to prevent putting GMO’s and the chemicals involved into their body. Store shelves are lined with several options of food alternatives such as “natural” and “organic.” If the label isn’t USDA Organic certified then it may still contain traces of GMO’s or other chemicals. USDA Certified Organic foods are required under strict laws and regulations to use all-natural products and no man-made chemicals when farming. Furthermore, any certified food product or farmer cannot use outside products that are not also USDA Organic certified. The rise in sustainable and organic farming has made it much easier for those choosing to eat natural and vegetarian. Many of the basic necessities for such a diet are now readily available at the local grocery rather than only at specialty stores.
