Braxton Lamb, 7 yrs old of White Pine, won the American Bantam Association Junior Show Champion at the Ohio National poultry show in Columbus, Ohio on November 8th, 2014. There were 9600 total birds and around 1700 junior entries in this competition. Braxton was born with a heart defect and has had several surgeries to repair it. He is doing very well but will never be able to compete in contact sports. His parents, Jared and Acoya, talked about what other activities he could be involved in and were not sure what he would enjoy. For his 5th birthday he asked for some chickens. After doing some research, his parents found a breed of chicken called a Silkie that had a reputation of being good for children and that he could show these chickens. They met with a breeder from Knoxville named Jack Ferguson that had an excellent reputation of breeding Silkies. Braxton started off with 4 chickens that he bought from him. Mr Ferguson taught Braxton about showing chickens and is now his mentor through the American Silkie Bantam Club. Braxton has been showing his chickens for a year and a half and has already achieved Junior Master Exhibitor with the club. He now has over 50 chickens that he raises.
