Beware of Mistletoe & Poinsettias

Asked AnsweredI really love mistletoe and poinsettias at Christmas but I just got a new puppy. I have heard that they are and are not dangerous for dogs. Do you know if I am safe to have these in my home?

I hate to be the source of bad news but neither poinsettia nor mistletoe is good for dogs and cats. Both, if ingested, can cause medical problems. Also of concern are lilies and holly and are often found in holiday arrangements. Both are highly dangerous if consumed, so take care that your new puppy isn’t in contact with them. I would suggest using silk arrangements. They are lovely and the risk to your new puppy isn’t worth the chance of having the real thing.
