Jefferson County Police and First Responders came out in force on Sunday, August 30, 2015 to honor the memory of one of their own: Chief John Yancey. Chief Yancey passed away suddenly on August 21, 2015 after more than 30 years of service as on officer in various locations across the state of Tennessee. Chief Yancey served Jefferson County since 2007, upon his relocation to the area. He was a former member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the Dandridge Police Department, and White Pine Police Department.

At the time of his passing he was the Chief of Police of Baneberry. As was evidenced by the strong showing of his fellow officers, Chief Yancey was a much appreciated and respected member of local law enforcement. In 2014, Jefferson Countians voted him the most popular law enforcement officer in the county. Earlier in his career, John Yancey had a canine partner, and his love and respect for animals was a central part of his daily life. Chief Yancey is survived by his wife Sigrid, daughter Amy, and stepson Mark.

Following a motorcade to the Field of Dreams on Sunday, a memorial service was held to celebrate the life of John Yancey. Speakers at the service included former Jefferson County Sheriff David Davenport, Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Phillip Davis, White Pine Police Department Officer Shane Hanshew, Jefferson County Mayor Alan Palmieri, and Jefferson County Police Department Keith Bunch.

Those wishing to make memorial donations can do so at Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue.
