LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I was dismayed to read your story of December 28th regarding the management and policies of the Jefferson County Humane Society. The cessation of the “Open Surrender” represents a clear threat to our animal population and also could be indicative of a management breakdown at the Humane Society.

The new president of the Humane Society appears to be exhibiting a very cavalier attitude towards the health and safety of strays in this county. Stopping “Open surrender” with the recommendation of taking these animals to shelters in other counties shows a lack of understanding of the role of the Humane Society.

Mr. Lubas’ comments on the predicament of the Animal Shelter and his apparent inability to promote harmony within his own staff would indicate someone who is not familiar with the mission of the group. As a charitable organization that relies on contributions at both a personal and municipal level, the Humane Society has, in the past, tried to protect those vulnerable animals that need our help. As a pet owner that has previously adopted several dogs through the Jefferson County Animal Shelter I am saddened at this attitude and the new direction of the organization.

If the Humane Society is no longer willing to fulfill their role then we as taxpayers and voters should consider other alternatives. This current path will only result in more stray, abandoned and surrendered animals being left on the streets to starve or die.
