UT Extension Offering New Series of Classes for New Year

The University of Tennessee Extension is offering classes in Weight loss (Pathweigh to Health), Diabetes Education (Taking Charge of Your Diabetes), Slow movement exercise (Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention), Healthy Eating (Eat Smart, Move More), and a Beginners Beekeepers Class.  If you are interested in these classes you may call the Extension office at 865-397-2969 to register.  There is a fee of $15.00 for the Tai Chi classes but all the other classes are FREE.  If Jefferson County Schools are closed, the class is canceled for that week.  The class is subject to cancellation if there is less than five in a class.

Pathweighs to Health

January 10, 24, 31, February 7 – 9:30 at the UT Extension Office

 The major barrier to healthy living is an obesogenic environment – that is an environment with limited opportunities for physical activity and an overabundance of highly processed, low-nutrient dense foods. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, these foods contribute about 35 percent of calories in the average American diet.  This class will give you information on proper nutrition and portion sizes.  The class will be followed by an optional low impact exercise session.

Take Charge of Your Diabetes

January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20 – 10:00-noon at the UT Extension Office

Diabetes is a complicated disease that can strike fear, confusion, and helplessness in diagnosed people and caregivers. People with diabetes must deal not only with their disease, but also with the impact this has on their lives and emotions. A self-management approach to diabetes education gives people the knowledge, tools and confidence to take day-by-day responsibility of their diabetes care.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention

January 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19. 26, March 5, 12, – 10:00 at the UT Extension Office

The 8-week program is designed for people with arthritis to reduce pain and stiffness, help maintain or improve mobility, muscle strength, memory, and balance. Individuals of all ages and mobility levels can benefit from the low impact course.

Eat Smart and Moving More

January 10, 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21, 28 – 9:00 a.m. at the Jefferson City Community Center

January 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19, 26 – 9:00 a.m. at the Field of Dreams in Dandridge.

This is a series of classes on learn how to cook, save money on food, plan meals, eat well, keep your food safe and be active.  Each week participants will learn how to prepare a recipe and enjoy a sampling of the recipe.  Following the session there is an optional walking session.

Beginners Beekeeping Class

February 12 and 13 9:00-noon

This is a two-session class to teach you about bees and how to get started with your own bee hive.  You must pre-register for this class at 865-397-2969.
