Carson-Newman University has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Last year, C-N was recognized with the Presidential Award, an honor presented to the nation’s top institution for community service.

“We are extremely pleased to be chosen for this year’s honor roll,” said Dr. Kina Mallard, C-N’s executive vice president and provost. “We are blessed to have a student body and dedicated faculty and staff who look for ways to help and serve others. This honor only confirms that we are holding true to our mission.”

In keeping with its commitment of preparing students to become worldwide servant leaders, Carson-Newman continues to provide service opportunities for students. The University’s Bonner Center annually oversees some 40,000 hours of community service by students; Since 1984, Appalachian Outreach and its volunteers have performed hundreds of home repair projects throughout the region; Each year Baptist Campus Ministries sends out more than 300 fall and spring break volunteers to serve not only across Tennessee, but also nationally and internationally.

During this year’s spring break, 131 C-N participants on 10 teams will take part in ministry and outreach projects in Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Iowa, Georgia. A group will also travel to Guatemala.

The National Assessment of Service and Community engagement notes that over 75% of Carson-Newman students participate in service, while nearly 40% serve more than 10 hours each month.

Launched in 2006, The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve.
