Battle of the Orange and Blue Blood Drive

Tennessee vs Kentucky Competition

Medic Tennessee vs Kentucky 2013It’s time once again to prove the volunteer spirit is alive and well in East Tennessee!  Medic Regional Blood Center’ 26th Annual Battle of the Orange and Blue—a blood drive competition between Tennessee and Kentucky kicks off Monday, November 18.   This friendly competition pits Vol fans against fans of the Kentucky Wildcats to see which group can bring in the most blood donations over a one week period.   “It is a fun way to play off the football rivalry and get the community involved,” explains, Christi Fightmaster, Director of Public Relations for Medic.  The overall score of the competition comes down to 12 wins for Vol fans, 12 wins for Wildcat fans and back in 1992 there was a tie.   “The tie in 1992 just shows everyone how close this competition can be and that every single donation can make a difference,’ says Fightmaster.

Volunteer fans have fallen to Wildcat fans the last three years and Medic is offering lots of great incentives to help garner more participation.   Donors at all locations will receive a free game day t-shirt, free small, one-topping pizza from Papa John’s and a small Frosty from Wendy’s.  Donors are also welcome to visit one of Medic’s two donor centers:  1601 Ailor Avenue 11000 Kingston Pike in Farragut behind Pittsburgh Paints. Donors who visit one of these two donor centers will receive an additional incentive item:  a free Regal Cinema movie pass with no expiration date.

Community drives are:

  • November 19, Papa John’s, 617 Broadway Boulevard, 11am – 7pm, Bloodmobile.
  • November 21 & 22, Walmart/Morristown, 10am – 6pm, Bloodmobile.

This event was started 26 years ago as a way for both Medic Regional Blood Center and Kentucky Blood Center to collect enough blood to adequately supply local hospitals during the holiday season.   During the holiday season blood donation collections decline; however, the need can increase this time of year.  The Battle of the Orange and Blue is a trusted way to ensure blood is on Medic’s shelves and hospital-ready when needed.
