Sixth Inning Errors Down Patriots, 7-4

Former Jefferson County High School standout, Andy Chrisman, now the Head Coach at Cocke County High School, got his first win over his alma mater Wednesday evening. For the Fighting Cocks, it was their first win against Jefferson County on the diamond since 2007. The excitement was evident for Cocke County, as they gave Chrisman the victory bath from the water cooler and hugs were being exchanged as though they had won the conference championship. With the win the Fighting Cocks improve to 7-14(3-6 IMAC).

As for Jefferson County it was a day that nobody wanted to remember, especially Head Coach Gaines Cox, “This one stings, this one hurts.” Cox also hopes that this game can be a learning tool for his young team, “This is the one that should motivate them to work in the off season.” He added, “ All the credit goes to Cocke County they made us make plays, and we just couldn’t do it.”

The two teams were tied after the first inning at 1-1, however it didn’t take long for Jefferson County to gain the lead back in the second inning. Trevor Whitley would lead off the second inning with a double and later score to give the Pats a 2-1 lead after 2 innings of play. Neither team would score again until the sixth inning, when Trevor Whitley would score yet again giving the Patriots a 3-1 lead heading in to the bottom half of the sixth inning. Cocke County would answer in the bottom half with 6 runs of their own on just 2 hits. Jefferson County committed 3 errors in the sixth inning, to go a long with 3 HBP’s (Hit By Pitch) from Jefferson County pitcher’s. Cocke County led after 6 innings of play, 7-3. The Patriots would add one run in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as they fell 7-4.
