Madison Owens would hit a bases loaded triple in the top of the ninth to lead the Lady Patriots to a 4-1 victory over Cocke County on Thursday afternoon. With the win the Lady Patriots have gained the regular season sweep of Cocke County and have not lost to a Cocke County team since the 2004 season. “ It wasn’t the prettiest win, but I will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.” Head Coach Bekkah Massaro on her teams’ win.

Jefferson County trailed after the fourth inning of play 1-0 and looked doomed for their fourth consecutive loss, but as it would turn out, a double by Allee West would plate a run in the top of the seventh inning for the Lady Patriots. “The bottom of our lineup stepped up in the seventh inning and kept us in this game.” Massaro said. After coming in for Madison Owens in the sixth inning, Leslie Odom shut down the Fighting Cocks. Odom did not allow a single hit, did not walk anyone, and struck out 5 in just 2.2 innings of work.

Owens’ would gain a no decision on the mound but would ultimately decide the outcome of the game from the plate. In the top of the ninth inning with bases loaded Owens belted a shot to left field, a bad angle from the fielder would allow the ball to roll all the way to the fence. The play ended with Owens sliding safely into third and Jefferson County leading 4-1. The Lady Pats would win by that margin and improve to 10-12 on the season but 6-4 in the IMAC and in a tie for 2nd place in the conference.

Overall Massaro feels pretty fortunate where her team is considering some costly plays earlier this season, “It is a good thing, but we are lucky. Our goals haven’t changed.”
