ETSU – Chase captures consecutive A-Sun Scholar-Athlete accolades

Ludvigsen, Burley and Tobis named to Academic All-Conference Team

Buccaneer.289.1245.KJunior distance runner Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) was named Atlantic Sun Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark), Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany) were selected to the Academic All-Conference Team, the league office announced Wednesday.

This honor is the second-straight season in which Chase has been named Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Kingsport native earned this season’s honor by posting a 4.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while majoring in mathematics, in addition to numerous athletic accomplishments. Chase competed in two individual events at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships, including a second-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase. His season-best came at the Raleigh Relays in a time of 9:10.28 which ranks him in the top-80 in the East Region in that event. He also recorded a new personal best in the 5000m at the War Eagle Invitational.

Joining Chase with men’s academic honors was Ludvigsen on the men’s outdoor track & field Academic All-Conference Team via a unanimous selection after carrying a 3.82 cumulative GPA while majoring in finance. On the track this season, the senior competed in two events at the league Championships including placing sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Ludvigsen was also selected as the conference’s Men’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this year and has been named to the dean’s list in five semesters at ETSU.

On the women’s side, Burley was a unanimous selection to the Academic All-Conference Team while recording a 3.95 cumulative GPA in exercise science. In the field during this outdoor season, the local product captured the A-Sun title in the triple jump with a leap of 12.25 meters, while also placing among the top 13 in the long and high jumps. In addition, the senior recorded a personal best in the triple jump at the University of Tennessee Challenge on May 3 with a mark of 12.49 meters. Furthermore, Burley was named the A-Sun Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this year.

Joining her teammates on the Academic All-Conference Team was Tobis who boasts a 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in mass communications. The sophomore, who has a radio/TV/film concentration in her major, also had an impressive season in throws events. Tobis set a new conference record in the javelin throw with a toss of 45.66 meters to place first in the event at the A-Sun Outdoor Championships. Additonally, Tobis set three personal bests this outdoor season including in the discus throw at the Raleigh Relays (47.09m), in the hammer throw at the Radford Alumni Invitational (35.44m) and in the javelin at the War Eagle Invitational (45.99 meters). Moreover, native German has made the dean’s list during three semesters at ETSU.
