TUSCULUM WOMEN’S TENNIS ENDS SEASON NATIONALLY RANKED

Tusculum Tennis 06042014The Tusculum College women’s tennis team has ended the 2013-14 listed 39th in the country according to the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division II Poll.

The Pioneers also finished seventh in the final ITA/NCAA II Southeast Region rankings.

This marks the sixth time since becoming a NCAA II member that the Pioneers have ended the year nationally-ranked.

The Pioneers finished the season with a stellar 22-3 overall record as Tusculum captured the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Tournament title to punch TC’s ticket for the NCAA postseason.

Tusculum’s 22 victories are the most in program and South Atlantic Conference history.  The Pioneers won five of its final six matches, including a thrilling 5-4 win over Newberry in the SAC Tournament championship match.

NCAA II national champion Barry finishes atop this year’s final poll, ahead of national runner-up Armstrong.  Saint Leo is third, followed by BYU Hawaii, Lynn, Hawaii Pacific, West Florida, Columbus State, Rollins and Florida Southern to round out the top-10.

NYIT is 11th, followed by California (Pa.), Academy of Art, Azusa Pacific, Valdosta State, Midwestern State, St. Mary’s (Texas), Southwest Baptist, Northeastern State, Cal State Los Angeles, Concordia, Shorter, Francis Marion, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific to comprise the top-25.

The remainder of the poll includes Georgia College, Lewis, Wayne State (Mich.), UC San Diego, Drury, Flagler, Tarleton, Cameron, Lander, Nova Southeastern, Augustana, Tampa, Queens (N.Y.), Tusculum, Chestnut Hill, Northwood, Indiana (Pa.), Grand Valley State, Palm Beach Atlantic, Wingate, USC Aiken, West Virginia State, Arkansas Tech, Arkansas Fort Smith and Florida Tech.

The final ITA Southeast Region Poll has Armstrong in first, followed by Columbus State, Francis Marion, Georgia College, Flagler, Lander, Tusculum, Wingate, USC Aiken and Erskine.

The Tusculum women’s tennis program has amassed five South Atlantic Conference championships, three SAC Tournament titles and eight trips to the NCAA II Tournament 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2014.
