New Market School students and staff enjoyed a day to Celebrate Authors, last week. Special guests Galen Carpenter, author of two children’s books, Reed Carringer, sports writer and photographer for Rocky Top Insider Magazine and Jeff Depew, Editor of the Jefferson County Post, were on hand to speak to the student body about different aspects of their careers.

Students had virtual visits will April Jones Prince, author of “Meet Our Flag, Old Glory” and school counselor Carrie Trent spent the day prior to Celebrate Authors day reading the story to every classroom in preparation for the virtual visit.

Students from upper classes read books to those in lower grades, as well as students whose stories were chosen as the best reading to the entire student body. Those students were presented with small rewards for their efforts.

Celebrate Authors day is a part of an ongoing writing series that New Market has been employing this year. Teacher Jessy Anderson of the fifth grade and Jocelyn Rimmer of the fourth grade attended training for the Lucy Calkins Units of Writing Series in Indianapolis last year.
