RAYMOND CLIFFORD MORGAN

RAYMOND CLIFFORD MORGAN, of New Market, TN, 5 days short of his 90th birthday, transitioned from his earthly life after a brief illness in the evening hours of August 24, 2016. He was cared for in his final days at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Raymond, affectionately known as Gramps, was born in Talbott, TN on August 29, 1926. His mother, Pearl Baer Morgan and the extended Baer family moved from the banks of the Holston River in Hawkins County when the Tennessee Valley Authority began the hydropower project of the 1940’s. Raymond and his family relocated to New Market, Tennessee. There they operated a small dairy operation for many years. Raymond was the son of Pearl Baer Morgan Bacon, who preceded him in death. Joseph Baer, his uncle, was his mentor, father figure, and also preceded him in death as did many other aunts of the Baer family. Raymond left high school in New Market in 1944 to serve his country. He was a tank crewman in the Central Europe campaign of World War II. Raymond was married to Joyce Quarles Morgan in December, 1950. After 60 years of marriage Joyce died in 2010. There were many “in-laws” of the Brown and Nancy Quarles family who also have gone on before him. Raymond worked for New Jersey Zinc Co. Jefferson City for many years. After leaving New Jersey Zinc he returned to a previous occupation driving a semi-truck. He contracted work on his own. He was a member of George Street United Methodist Church, where he served in a “hands on” way when there was work to be done! He was devoted and so proud of his two grandchildren, Andrew and Katelyn. They are the children of his only child, Ramona. Gramps and Nonnie came to live in Maryville with Steve, Ramona, Andrew and Katelyn after a health occurrence in 2010. He lived with them for 6½ years. Immediate family is Ramona and her husband, Steve Hodge; grandchildren, Andrew and Katelyn. Gramps added another grandson when Katelyn married Denney Zimmerman in 2013. Chloe, the family dog, was his constant companion. If you would like to remember his life, please do so by giving to a cause that is dear to your heart. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service.
