The Jefferson County Commission met for its first voting meeting following the seating of the new body on Monday, September 21, 2026. Following the appearance of several citizens and an informational executive session, elections were held to place the County Commission Chair, Vice Chair, Chaplain, and Parliamentarian. Commissioners Carmichael and Snodgrass were nominated from the floor for the position of Chair. A roll call vote resulted in a supermajority of 14–7 in favor of Carmichael. Commissioner Huffaker was the only nomination from the floor for Vice Chair and was also seated by a supermajority of the commission, with only one dissenting vote. Commissioners Parker and Kilgore were nominated for the position of Chaplain. Kilgore, a newly elected commissioner from District 10, received the nod with a 12–9 split. Commissioners Leja and Loy were nominated for Parliamentarian, and Loy received a supermajority vote of 19–2 to win the seat.

In other business, several budget amendments on both the County and School sides were approved, as well as the consent agenda, additional surplus items, and a resolution concerning eminent domain and data centers. Discussion regarding a previous funding request from the Jefferson County Chamber was pulled by the requesting party but was not officially removed from the agenda during corrections. Historically, the removal of a funding request by the requesting body has been handled as a pulled item without formally removing it from the agenda. Commissioner Underwood expressed concern that, since it was not removed, it would require action. Following discussion, a motion was made to remove the item from the agenda, as it had been withdrawn by the requesting entity and no action was appropriate.

Nominating Committee members will serve on a Procedure Review Committee and bring any recommendations to the full body. Oversight of the Veteran’s Service Office was discussed, and the full body will determine who will serve as the day‑to‑day supervisor of the office. Several mayoral committee appointments were presented by Mayor Bales and approved by the commission.
