Remember Recorders?

This past week, there was an event at the local school in which my granddaughter and her classmates entertained by playing “recorders”.  When she told me about the event, I was suddenly struck with many fond memories involving a “recorder”.  I had no idea the schools were still playing “recorders”.  I actually thought they had “gone by the wayside” as many other great things have in the past.

If you do not know what a “recorder” is, I will enlighten you.  A recorder is a short flute with eight finger and thumb holes, and made of wood, plastic and sometimes ivory.  The sound is different from a full range flute, but enjoyable.  It is easy to play, making it a perfect instrument for children.

When I was in school, we had  “recorders” and played them in music class.  Music class was always a highlight of the day.  We only went to this class once or twice a week, but it was always pleasant.  Our  music teacher was Mrs. Massengil and she was special.  I can still smell the awesome perfume she was noted for wearing.  I loved to step inside her classroom to be met by the wonderful smell.  But, it was more than the smell that delighted the children.  She was a gracious southern lady and it was obvious to all how much she respected and loved her children.  And, believe me, that love was reciprocal.  Her classroom was “no nonsense”, but fun.

The “recorders” were only a few of the musical instruments played in the classroom.  And… the songs were awesome.  She excelled at selecting good, fun music to teach us.  I remember musical plays, scenes and songs from “South Pacific”, and a touch of drama.  There were patriotic songs, limericks set to music, and fun songs like, “A Frog Went A Courting”. I loved the seasonal songs, and there were many.  I even loved the performances for our parents.  Mrs Massengil always made sure we were ready for the performances, as we practiced… practiced… and practiced

Sadly, she is no longer with us, but, anyone who had the pleasure of having her as a music teacher (and there were many throughout her numerous years), surely loved her and her outstanding classroom.  It is good to see the “recorders” back on the scene, entertaining parents again
