Tennesseans played an important role in the War of 1812, particularly in the south, volunteering in such numbers so as to earn for Tennessee the nickname, “The Volunteer State.” Many East Tennesseans, including several Cherokee fought with General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. Whether your ancestor served from Tennessee or elsewhere, this lecture will introduce you to a variety of sources to identify his service and locate the military, pension, and bounty land records generated from this important conflict. Dr. George K. Schweitzer is a professor of chemistry at the University of Tennessee and a nationally known genealogy lecturer and author of 18 genealogy research books.
The program is sponsored by the Harriet Z. Albers Memorial Fund, and free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville.
